Every classroom has a moment when the silence stops being discipline and becomes listening. It is in that brief interval that the child decides whether it is worth showing what they thought.
What the game teaches before the class starts
Playing is not the interval between two contents. It is where the child tests hypotheses without fear of making mistakes, negotiates rules with their peers and discovers that there is more than one way to get to the same place.
When the child invents the rule of the game, she also invents the reason to follow it.
Three simple gestures to start
- Leaving the question in the air for longer than seems comfortable.
- Asking “how did you get here?” before saying you're right.
- Recording what the class invented, and not just what they got right.
From isolated gesture to daily practice
None of these gestures require new materials, additional training, or rearranging the schedule. They simply require treating the creation of the child as part of the work, and not as a reward for it.
